The Prosecco Wine Route stretches for 120km on the rolling hills between Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, so even getting lost in the winding lanes can turn out a unique adventure.

valdobbiadene

valdobbiadene

Start the trip from Valdobbiadene and in a few minutes you reach San Pietro di Barbozza, from where you can admire long stretches of hills lined by Prosecco grapes, occasionally giving way to a small village, wineries and ancient stone houses. The sinuosity of the hills and the vivid green of the vines make this natural spectacle a great place to experience a direct contact with nature.

osteria senz'oste

osteria senz’oste

As you leave behind the village of San Pietro di Barbozza look for the Osteria senz’Oste osteria without a host. There are no signposts to get there, so finding it is a sort of treasure hunt. Simply follow the signs to the Col Vetoraz winery, leave the main street – Via San Pietro – turn right and down towards the winery and you can park between vineyards. Once there take the path that branches off to the right of the winery itself. Here a stunning view discloses over the surrounding vine-clad hills.

abbazia s.maria follina - chiesa s. giovanni battista e castelbrando cison di valmarino

abbazia s.maria follina – chiesa s. giovanni battista and castelbrando cison di valmarino

Continuing along the Prosecco Wine Route towards Follina you drive through the villages of Combai and Miane. Follina, well-known for the Abbazia di Santa Maria, dating back to the twelfth century, is a spectacle of architecture. Take some time to wander around the small town as well. The charming village of Cison di Valmarino perfectly preserves the Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista built in the 17th century, the Loggia, now seat of the town hall, old Brandolini cellars, period houses and courtyards. On a hill right out of town stands the imposing CastelBrando, a fairytale castle where you can unleash your imagination and relive the Middle Ages.

revine lago - molinetto della croda a refrontolo

revine lago – molinetto della croda in refrontolo

Plan a stop off in Revine Lago for a walk along the lake banks in Lago and Santa Maria, where the Lago Film Fest, an international short movies festival, has been held every month of July since 2005. Do not miss the church of Santa Maria, one of the oldest in the area, dating back to the 12th century. The Molinetto della Croda in Refrontolo is a building of the XVII century completely renovated and transformed into a museum. Do not miss the nearby charming little village of Rolle nestled among the vines and the swaying Prosecco hills. The last stop on the Prosecco Wine Route leads to the church of San Vigilio in Col San Martino, a lovely church of the Roman era.

Where to eat?

alla cima - locanda villa sandi - locanda marinelli

alla cima – locanda villa sandi – locanda marinelli

The restaurant Alla Cima, via San Pietro di Barbozza 13, +390423972711, enjoys a great location, at the top of a hill overlooking the Prosecco valley. The attentive service and the high quality menu make a difference. Try the grilled meat cooked on the crackling hearth at the center of the room, or if you prefer you can admire the landscape from the heated veranda. In a typical Venetian farmhouse Locanda Villa Sandi, via Tessere 1 Valdobbiadene, +390423976239, welcomes you with extremely courteous staff, a warm ambiance and a choice of delicious food. Locanda Marinelli, via Castella 5 Col San Martino, +390438987038, is one of the few places where I feel free to recommend the tiramisu’, served in a very unusual creamy texture. CastelBrando, via Brandolini 29 Cison Di Valmarino, is a castle of Roman origin which has two restaurants, the more refined Sansovino and the less demanding but equally cosy Fucina with a choice of dishes and pizzas.

osteria ca' dei loff - P.E.R. latteria perenzin

osteria ca’ dei loff – P.E.R. perenzin dairy

The Osteria Ca’ dei Loff, via Vittorio Veneto 15 Cison Di Valmarino, tel. +39043885962, offers typical dishes of the Venetian cuisine, even the menu is completely written in dialect. On the ground floor you will find a typical osteria ambiance, while upstairs you will be pampered in a warm and cozy environment.  Arriving at the Locanda Al Monastero, via Enotria 21, Rolle Cison Di Valmarino, +390438975423, is rewarding in itself, following a narrow road surrounded by woods and Prosecco vineyards. The Locanda Al Monastero offers a different set menu every day of the week. A well-established and appreciated formula includes 3 starters, 2 primi (pasta and/or risotto), 1 secondo (meat or fish), dessert and coffee. On Thursdays the theme is the fish of the Adriatic, while on other days meat is the main course. An innovative restaurant in an Anglo-Saxon style is the P.E.R. Cheese Bar by the Perenzin Dairy, via Cervano 77 San Pietro di Feletto, +39043834874, where the dairy created an avenue for the direct resale of its products with its own restaurant. Open from breakfast till dinner.

Where to drink?

I would suggest the brewery La Gastaldia, via Rivasecca 5, Pieve di Soligo, +39043882081, for their excellent craft beers and for the building itself. A monastery which is difficult date, probably built during Roman times, where in the summer you can sit in the cloister. Definitely worth to try.
